Whether or whether rationality and science can save us remains to be seen. Gabriel Kuhn on Counterpunch: The Left’s False Wall of Defense

Lies spread through social media, potentially fatal health advice, “alternative facts,” info wars, and other similar phenomena. The far-right attack that has invaded government buildings all over the globe is easily causing alarm due to the disrespect for honesty, thoughtfulness, and sensitivity that is engaged in it. However, it is also concerning that a growing number of people on the left are adopting a neoliberal line of defence, praising idealistic conceptions of “science,” “reason,” and “rationalism.” This trend is disturbing for a variety of reasons. This overlooks decades of leftist criticisms of such conceptions, which were established by philosophers whose backgrounds were as diverse as the Frankfurt School, poststructuralism, and the philosophy of science.

Since the beginning of patriarchy and colonialism, unquestioning adherence to ideological conceptions of science, reason, and rationalism has been an essential component of both of these social orders. It has been condemned by feminist voices all around the globe as well as those of indigenous people. In the discussion that is taking on right now, these points of view cannot be overlooked. These ideas are responsible for putting us in the precarious position in which we find ourselves now, which is on the precipice of an ecological, economic, and political meltdown. Can we put our faith in them to come to our rescue? And even if they are successful in containing the fascist menace, don’t we deserve something more than the establishment of a patriarchal and Eurocentric tradition?

Gabriel Kuhn is interviewed by Znet on Sober Living

This book examines the intersection between traditional politics and alternative political movements. Straight edge is a hardcore punk subculture that began in the early 1980s in Washington, District of Columbia, and quickly became a worldwide phenomenon. Straight edge is characterized by a drug-free lifestyle. Throughout its thirty-year existence, it has evolved into a variety of guises and passed through many stages. Politically speaking, it is often connected with self-righteous moralism and conservative puritanism; nevertheless, this description just scratches the surface of the topic.

Since the genre’s inception, numerous individuals, bands, and entire scenes have associated it with progressive and radical politics. This is partly due to the belief that having a “sober mind” is the best foundation for effective political work, and partly due to the perception that the alcohol, nicotine, and drug industries are tools used by the state and capital to exploit and pacify the people. One history is broken down into a series of interviews, essays, and documents that were gathered from all four continents and compiled into this collection. It features contributions from prominent figures in the history of straight edge music, such as Ian MacKaye and Dennis Lyxzén, from legendary left-leaning straight edge bands, such as ManLiftingBanner from the Netherlands and Point of No Return from Brazil, from activists from predominantly radical straight edge scenes, such as those in Sweden or Israel, and radical activists with straight edge leanings, such as the CrimethInc. Ex-Workers Collective. The book also includes ground-breaking analyses of the connections between queer and feminist culture and straight-edge culture, which is something I’m quite proud of having accomplished.

In a nutshell, the purpose of the book is to convey the message that abstaining from drugs is not the sole preserve of ignorant traditionalists, but rather a vibrant and active component of a political underground that is radical.

Are you able to provide ZNet with any information regarding the writing of the book? Where exactly does all of this content originate? What factors contributed to the book’s development into its current form?

As an editor, it was my job to work on this book. I was in charge of compiling it, conducting the interviews, editing the contributors’ work, putting everything in the correct order, and writing the introduction. I have been considering writing the book for quite some time, but I never imagined that I would be able to find a publisher for it. Things proceeded from that point onward because, fortunately, the people working at PM were willing to give it a chance.

It is a book that holds a great deal of personal significance for me. Since I was sixteen years old, I’ve been both straight edge and active in radical circles, and the fact that I’ve done both of these things has very frequently – and in a wide variety of settings – been met with confusion and the suggestion that this in some way posed a contradiction. In addition, I was very dissatisfied with some of the political ways that straight edge took, particularly in the 1990s when certain factions of the so-called hardline movement became overtly homophobic or condemned abortion. I found these developments particularly upsetting. Therefore, it makes me extremely happy that I was able to write a book that presents the straight edge community, which is a group that I have always identified with because its members are democratically aware and conscious, passionate and virtuous, but not judgmental or one-dimensional.

How did the book become what it is today?

To avoid sounding trite, the contributors certainly made a difference. The writing of the book was a truly enjoyable group effort that brought about a great deal of satisfaction. During the process, it was brought to my attention how compassionate and encouraging the global hardcore public still is. It was a very positive and encouraging experience that was extremely uplifting.

What do you anticipate will come of reading the book? To what do you hope it will contribute or contribute politically? What do you hope it will achieve? What, in light of the work you’ve put in and the goals you have for the book, will you consider to be a successful outcome? What is it about the endeavour as a whole that would make you content? What would make you question whether the outcome was worth the investment of your time and energy?

To tell you the truth, I expect that these writings will be read by the greatest number of people possible. The question of whether or not they will all become straight edge after that is hardly relevant. Many people choose to live a drug-free lifestyle not because it is a trend or a code of conduct promising a false sense of moral superiority, but rather because they have strong convictions that motivate them to do so, and I would hope that the audience knows that the straight edge movement incorporates both progressive and radical tenets. In addition to this, I hope that the book will help raise awareness about the political consequences of the use of illegal drugs, nicotine, and alcohol. Again, the specific personal choices that the readers will make don’t matter all that much; what I want is for them to be choices that are conscious and responsible. Living straight edge is one choice, but there are many more.

So, if I get a sensation that the book enhances understanding of progressives and radical straight-edge communities and instigates conversation about the drug business, then I’d judge it a success in a larger sense. Yet, I’d never doubt the time and the work that went into it since it was all so much fun and placed me in contact with so many lovely individuals.

What is the most convenient method to purchase the book? Could you tell us more about the publishing house?

The book may be purchased either directly from the PM Press website, through an independent bookshop, or via a distributor, however, purchasing it directly from PM Press is the most convenient option. The money will be kept inside our community and will be used toward the funding of vital political programs in this manner.

PM Press was established just a few short years ago, but in that little period, it has already published an extensive catalogue of books, DVDs, and CDs. A few individuals are participating who have very deep roots in the hardcore punk movement, and this undoubtedly helped to collect support for this initiative. It would be preferable for you to merely read their website if you want to have a better notion of the titles that they are bringing out at this time.

During the Anarchist Bookfair Montreal 2020, Gabriel Kuhn will give a speech

Gabriel Kuhn, an author based in Sweden, will read his book, Liberating Sápmi, which was just recently published (PM Press, 2020). This book is an introduction to the ongoing struggle of the Sami people for self-determination, which is often ignored even though it is taking place right now. It is based on interviews with Sami activists, artists, and academics. In addition to this, it provides incontrovertible evidence of the significant part that the Sámi play in the struggle of indigenous people against a political and economic system whose capacity to eradicate all life on earth has reached a level that has never been seen before in the annals of human history.

Gabriel Kuhn is a writer, a translator, and an activist for a labour union. He has a significant body of work in both English and German. His writings have been translated into over a dozen different languages at this point.
