If you have a project to do at home and want to keep the costs down, why not do it yourself? DIY is a great way to save money and labour expenses. As well as this, it is a satisfying pastime and can help to expand your labouring skills. However, if you want to commit to DIY, you must have the right tools for the job

If your project requires drilling, you need to ensure you have the correct drill and drill bit for the job. Choosing the wrong drill and drill bit can result in damage to the material you are drilling into. With so many drills and drill bits on the market, how do you know which to choose? For more information on choosing the right drill bit for your DIY project, read on.

What is a drill bit?

A drill bit is a device used to determine the size and shape of the hole you want to drill. You attach the appropriate drill bit into the corresponding drill to make your hole. To get the correct hole, you have some considerations to make.

What material are you drilling?

Your first consideration is the type of material you are drilling into. The type of drill and drill bit used will determine how neat and successful your hole is.

For example, if you are trying to attach something to a masonry wall you will need to make a hole with a drill such as the Milwaukee drill, insert a plug, and screw your item to the wall. Ensure the screw goes into the centre of the plug, making the plug expand. Once you have done this, your item will stay attached to the wall without the risk of falling.

You should repeat this process with different drills and materials. For example, if you use a combi drill or an SDS drill, you will need different drill bits as they all have different functions. Wood is typically drilled using a combi drill like the Milwaukee, whereas masonry is easier to drill with an SDS drill.

What size hole are you creating?

The second consideration you need is the size of the hole you need to drill. The size of the hole depends on the size of the plug. For example, if you drill an 8mm plug into a masonry wall, you will need an 8mm masonry drill bit.
